Hey, Deepwater Cougars! Did you know that Deepwater Elementary is the very first and only AVID Elementary campus in Deer Park ISD?  Avid stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination.  Those are a lot of really big words, so we tried to make it a little bit easier for you.  AVID stands for Moving Up Through My Own Hard Work. AVID it's all about developing good habits that will help you in class and eventually when you become an adult.  We have a very strong college-going culture here at Deepwater because we want you to begin thinking about college and your career path.  So what's the purpose of our AVID binder? Organization is a very important skill in school, your career, and many aspects of your daily lives.   The AVID binder is an organizational tool to help you keep notes, assignments, and anything else in one location. You are expected to maintain your AVID binder which we have provided for you.  You will be taught how to organize it and how to use it.  If you lose your binder, you must purchase a new one from the front office for $3. You will be evaluated weekly on the organization of your binder.  We are checking to see if you have all of the materials in the right place for every class. So what should be in the AVID binder? Here is what your AVID binder will look like.  The front cover will be provided for you it will have your first name and then it will have some areas for you to decorate it with areas of interest for you.  The front inside pocket will be the take home folder. This is where you will take any materials that need to go home to your family any homework or anything that your teacher needs to communicate with your family.   You will then have a pencil pouch with all of your supplies inside. You will have a planner 3rd and 4th grade friends your planner will be actually hole punch and put it in the binder 5th grade you will have to slide yours in or carry it separately.   You will also have a divider for each subject area that you attend throughout a school day. At the very back of your divider in the back pocket you will have what's called the binder rubric this is how you will be graded every single week So if you're curious how you're going to get your grade that week is this rubric will tell you what it is that we are looking for.  And then on the very back cover you will have what we will complete at open house which is a successful student portrait. So your binder is your responsibility.  We will help teach you how to use the binder but you are responsible for keeping it organized. Remember AVID is moving up through my own hard work.
